WHO WE ARE

We are two girls breaking barriers and sharing our stories living as Asian females in the western world.

We are third generation Asian American females whose intersectional identities largely shape our worldviews and because of this, we are better able to bridge the gap between the Western and Eastern world.

We aim to be as authentic and raw as possible when speaking with our audience, because we know that many of them can relate to our hardships and upbringings, and hearing our podcast will hopefully help them feel less alone; something we ourselves never had growing up. But of course, our perspectives do not encompass those of all Asians, so we often invite guest speakers of all different backgrounds to speak about their experiences and knowledge.

We want to make sure the whole Asian community has a voice, whether this means giving a guest from across the world a chance to share their culture with our audience (In our series Asian Girl Traveling the World), sharing the unheard stories of those in our community (In our series Sharing Asian Narratives), or allowing our listeners to ask for our advice and ensure that their concerns and questions are valued.

WHY WE CREATED THIS PODCAST

It all started with a 3 AM phone call. First, it was every once in a while, then every week, then nearly every night, because for the first time in each of our lives, we found someone we could relate to and open up about our struggles with. We talked until sunrise about the ways we struggled connecting to our heritage while also trying to blend into American culture, facing stereotypes perpetuated against our community, the lack of unity between the East and West, and much more. But we realized that we are not the only ones who go through these struggles, so we wanted to open our conversations to the world and provide solutions to those whose experiences are similar to ours. Our podcast, Asian Girl In A Western World, serves as not only an outlet for us to share our ideas, but also a platform for our community to share their experiences, celebrate their identities, and take action in uplifting one another.

In all of our 3 am conversations, common questions that always came up were “Why aren’t others taking the time to help the underserved?” or “Why wait when we become older to help others when we could do it now?”. Having these questions in mind, we realized in order to change the world, we have to be willing to do it ourselves, but without the “WHY,” there is no direction and the root of the problem will not be solved. As founders of Asian Girl In A Western World podcast, we are strong believers in taking action to help and amplify the voices of the voiceless. With every episode, we raise money to create care packages for the homeless and donate to medically underserved hospitals in NYC in hopes of serving our community and encouraging more people to do the same.
